Ichirizuka were first constructed in 1604 at every "ri" (3.927 kilometers or 2.440 miles) from Nihonbashi in Edo, the starting point of the Tokaido, and the ichirizuka in Chigasaki is the 14th mound on the route. Until around the end of the Taisho era, they were erected on both sides of the road, but now only the south side remains due to the widening of the road. According to a record of the ichirizuka from the mid-18th century, it is noted that "pine trees are planted on the mound on the right and enoki trees on the mound on the left."
