The Toma family has been the head of Yanagishima Village for generations, and as a merchant family engaged in the shipping business, they did extensive business in Edo and elsewhere in the early modern period. The family has confirmed that the early modern stone walls and other newly discovered remains, such as the ruins of a storehouse, are still encased within the site, making it a valuable site that demonstrates the condition of the early modern merchant house.
