Cultural Heritage
The Toma family were wealthy farmers who served as the village headmen from the middle of the Edo period and were also involved in the shipping business. According to the building plaque, the building was constructed in 1932 and designed by Nishimura Architect Company, and the master builder was Ishii Kanekichi. Drawings and documents from the time of construction have been preserved. The building faces east toward the center of the site. Although a Western-style room is only on the south side of the entrance, the entire east facade, including the Japanese-style room on the north side, is clapboarded in a Western-style design. The rest of the building is clapboarded in a contrasting Japanese style with sasarako frame battens. It is a modern residence that shows a part of the designer Nishimura Isaku's style, with rooms arranged in front of and behind a central corridor in the plan. In July 2017, the building was donated to the city, along with the site, and is now open to the public as the Folk Museum Old Toma House, and the exterior of the building is open to the public.
